Transporting gas in liquid form

What is Natural Gas?

  • Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane and ethane
  • It is odourless, colourless and flammable. It is also non-toxic and lighter than air.
  • It is said that nearly 80% of the world’s total proven natural gas reserves are located in ten countries!
  • Russia tops the list, holding about a quarter of world’s total gas reserves, followed by Iran and Qatar in the Middle East.
Natural gas is an important source of energy for heating, cooking, and electricity generation!
When gas is condensed into liquid, it takes only 1/600th of the volume.
The processes involved in transforming gas into liquid is very complex, as the gas needs to be cooled down to -160°C degrees!

Why Convert Gas into Liquid?

  • Liquefied Natural Gas, or most commonly known as LNG, is basically natural gas in a liquid form by cooling it to cryogenic temperature of 160°C
  • This makes it efficient for delivery as well as safe transportation to global destinations across the oceans.
  • Qatar is the world’s top LNG player, both in terms of exports and liquefaction capacity, and Nakilat is the energy transportation arm which supports in delivering LNG to over 90 LNG terminals worldwide.

Transporting gas in liquid form

  • A liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier is a massive tank ship designed for transporting liquefied gas, efficiently delivering energy across the oceans.
  • There are various types of containment systems that are currently in use for LNG ships today.
  • Majority of LNG carriers today have a cargo capacity between  135,000 m3 – 175,000 m3
  • Here is an interesting fact you probably did not know! Nakilat, a leading global shipping and maritime company, owns and co-owns ALL but one of the largest LNG ships in the world with over 200,000 m3 capacity!
These containment tanks serve as giant thermoses to keep the liquid gas cold during throughout the entire voyage!
